What are Product Rules?

Comestri Product Rules provide a way to automatically assign Categories to products in the Comestri PIM.

Product Rules can also remove Categories from products.

(Product Rules can also assign and remove Shipping Zones, but these are only used in the Comestri eBay Channel.)

How are Product Rules structured?

Product Rules consist of a series of conditional logic statements. This means they use an ‘IF-THEN-ELSE’ structure.

Each ‘IF’ statement can have multiple conditions which are joined together by an ‘AND’ or an ‘OR’.

Types of Product Rules

  1. Static Product Rules
  2. Dynamic Product Rules

Static Product Rules

Static Product Rules can only generate one result. In other words, each Rule can only assign or remove one particular Category or Shipping Zone.

Static Product Rules are the preferred option when you want to remove a Category or Shipping Zone.

Dynamic Product Rules

Dynamic Product Rules are the preferred option when:

  • You want to reduce the number of Product Rules required to assign a Category to products. Dynamic Product Rules allow you to achieve this by deciding the Category path dynamically using the value of an Attribute.
  • You want to assign multiple Categories to a product using a single Product Rule (as opposed to using multiple Static Product Rules).

Dynamic Product Rules utilise the Liquid template language.

Overview of Product Rules

On the Product Rules page, you can perform the following tasks to manage Product Rules:

  • Create Product Rules
  • Edit Product Rules
  • Delete Product Rules
  • Validate Product Rules
  • Run Product Rules

 Create Product Rules

You can create Product Rules in two ways:

  • Manually – Click the New Product Rule button to open the New Product Rule dialog box where you can define details for the new Product Rule.
  • Via CSV – Click the Upload Rules button to open the Upload dialog box where you can select and upload a CSV file of Product Rules you have previously defined. (This creation method is an advanced concept. See the link above for more details.)

Edit Product Rules

You can edit Product Rules in two ways:

  • Manually – Next to the Product Rule you want to edit, click the ellipsis (…) and select Edit to open the Edit Product dialog box where you can edit details for the Product Rule.
  • Via CSV – Click the Upload Rules button to open the Upload dialog box where you can select and upload a CSV file that modifies existing Product Rules.

Delete Product Rules

You can only delete Product Rules one way:

  • Manually – Next to the Product Rule you want to delete, click the ellipsis (…) and select Delete to delete the Product Rule.

Validate Product Rules

After uploading a CSV file to create Product Rules, you should validate the Rules to ensure that their internal logic will allow the Rules to run.

Validation, however, does not ensure that the Rules’ conditions will generate the desired results.

You validate Product Rules by:

  • Clicking the Validate All Rules button.

Run Product Rules

For Product Rules to take effect, they must be run.

Product Rules can be triggered to run in two ways:

  • Automatically – Product Rules will be automatically triggered when a product is created or edited.
  • Manually – You can manually trigger Product Rules by selecting the checkboxes next to the Product Rules you want to run and then clicking the Run Selected Rules button. Often used to apply new Rules to existing products.
