What are Lookup Tables?

Comestri Lookup Tables provide a way of storing product data in a tabulated form in Comestri, making it easier to automate aspects of product enrichment.

How do Lookup Tables work?

A Lookup Table in Comestri works like a telephone directory.

In the same way that you search for a person’s name in the directory to get their number, you can use a Lookup Table to search for a value based on another value.

Benefits of using Lookup Tables

There are 2 main benefits:

  1. Lookup Tables reduce the need to maintain multiple Attributes to store alternate values related to products. For example, you could use a Lookup Table to store together the different apparel size systems required by various external platforms, instead of maintaining multiple Attributes to hold the size system required by each external platform.
  2. Lookup Tables also reduce the need to manually enter the values for product Attributes. For example, they can be used to automatically populate a destination Attribute (e.g. Colour Family) based on the value of a source Attribute (e.g. Colour), instead of manually entering the values for each of these Attributes.

Where can you use Lookup Tables in Comestri?

Lookup Tables can be used in the Comestri PIM and Comestri Channels.

In the following screens, you’ll see more detailed examples of the various uses for Lookup Tables in the PIM and Channels.

Using Lookup Tables in the Comestri PIM

Lookup Tables in the PIM can be created via the Comestri UI and the Comestri API.

In the PIM, Lookup Tables are commonly used to:

  • Populate Attribute values
  • Assign Categories

Populate Attribute values

You can use a Lookup Table to automatically populate a destination Attribute value based on a source Attribute value.

In this way, you could use a fashion Colour value (“Bubblegum”) to automatically populate a Colour Family value (“Pink”) used by an external platform.

You can also use Product Rules with a Lookup Table to populate Attribute values.

Assign Categories

You can assign Categories to products using a Lookup Table and a Product Rule.

For instance, you could have a Lookup Table with 2 columns – Gender and Category – each of which holds multiple values.

Using a Product Rule, you could assign a Category to a product by using a Category value that matches the value of its associated Gender Attribute in the Lookup Table.

Using Lookup Tables in Comestri Channels

Lookup Tables in Channels can be created using a CSV file.

In Channels, Lookup Tables are commonly used to translate Attribute values from the PIM into values that external platforms will accept.

You can reference Lookup Tables created in the Comestri PIM, or created in any Channel, from all Comestri Channels.

Translate Attribute values

You can use a Lookup Table in Channels to translate PIM Attribute values into values accepted by an external platform.

For instance, you could translate PIM Attribute values for an apparel size system (e.g. Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large) into values accepted by an online marketplace (e.g. XS, S, M, L, XL).
